Burnaway expands coverage of New Orleans and the Gulf South, bringing on former Pelican Bomb staffer as first regional Editor-at-Large.
Following Pelican Bomb’s close in November 2018, we’re pleased to announce that Burnaway will provide expanded coverage of New Orleans to continue the nuanced and insightful commentary and analysis previously offered by Pelican Bomb’s Art Review. In August 2019, former Pelican Bomb Editorial and Communications Manager Charlie Tatum will join Burnaway’s masthead as the New Orleans Editor-at-Large, ensuring that critics, artists, and curators in the city and surrounding areas remain a vital part of regional and national conversations. Tatum is the first of several regional editors to be appointed by Burnaway in the coming year.
As close allies in the effort to bolster visibility for contemporary art in the American South, Pelican Bomb and Burnaway have long been in dialogue, previously teaming up on projects and occasionally sharing editorial content across websites. In 2015, we worked together to develop a dual-city critics’ residency program with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The program brought three arts writers—curator Erin Dziedzic, art historian Eva Díaz, and curator and professor Noah Simblist—to New Orleans and Atlanta to meet with artists, visit arts institutions, lead workshops, and give public lectures. It also provided a positive example of how small arts organizations could collaborate to leverage resources in the region.
Since 2008, Burnaway has brought a range of frank and fresh perspectives on art and life in their coverage of the American South, and we’re thrilled about its expanded presence in the city. We hope Pelican Bomb readers will follow Burnaway’s coverage of New Orleans in the months ahead.
