Join us in Atlanta on September 28 from 4 to 10 pm for Burnaway’s new seasonal fundraising event, Art & Amble. Enjoy one-of-a-kind curated excursions through the city’s best galleries, artist studios, and private collections to benefit Burnaway, the region’s leading publication on Southern contemporary art and culture. Guests will cruise Atlanta in a privately chartered bus, stopping for three unique and intimate art experiences complete with artist-inspired cocktails, performances, special guests, delicious bites, and unforgettable surprises along the way.
Stop One: Sonya Yong James’s Exhibition at Whitespace Gallery
James will provide an immersive hands-on experience for guests to try out one of her signature fiber techniques.
James has long been a fixture in the Atlanta arts community, known for her innovative and meditative approach to contemporary textile processes. She is an alumna of the Welch School of Art & Design at Georgia State University and has exhibited nationally and internationally for the past twenty years. Her work is held in numerous corporate and private collections and has been exhibited in galleries and museums locally such as MOCA GA, Atlanta Contemporary, The Hudgens Center for the Arts, The Albany Museum of Art, and the Zuckerman Museum of Art. She is currently a member of the Studio Artists Program at Atlanta Contemporary and is represented by Whitespace Gallery.
Stop Two: Chris Verene’s Exhibition at Marcia Wood Gallery
High Museum Associate Curator of Photography Greg Harris will provide expert insights on Verene’s work and a broader history of Southern contemporary photography.
Chris Verene was born in 1969 in Galesburg, Illinois. He earned an MFA in photography/studio art at Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, and currently lives and works in New York City. Chris Verene’s work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Arrt, and others. Verene was the first-ever photographer to receive a Pollock-Krasner Grant for full support (2002-2003).
Stop Three: Joe Peragine’s Studio
The tour will conclude at Joe Peragine’s studio, where guests will be able to see the artist’s newest large-scale mural.
Joseph Peragine’s paintings, sculpture, and animation have been presented in galleries, contemporary art spaces, and museums throughout the USA and internationally. Recent exhibitions include After The Hunt at Marcia Wood Gallery and Transitions: States of Being at the Zuckerman Art Museum at Kennesaw State University. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Peragine lives with his family in Atlanta.
