We received word this morning that artist and curator John Otte passed away yesterday in New Orleans. During a phone call this afternoon, his family expressed gratitude to those who have already reached out with condolences.
Born in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Otte was raised in Atlanta where he returned after cutting his teeth in the New York art world for 12 years. In Atlanta, Otte was a cornerstone of the city’s art scene for years and, in recent memory, began positioning himself in New Orleans as a regional ambassador for all things cerebral, modernist, and experimental. Through his own visual practice, his passion for music, and the opportunities he gave others through his curatorial work, Otte spread the belief that smart and wonderful things can and will continue taking root in the South.
Susan Bridges, his mother and the owner of Whitespace Gallery, was understandably unavailable for comment. There will be a small service in New Orleans for close friends and family and a memorial service in Atlanta at a later date. The family intends to release information about where contributions can be made. Condolences can be sent to her by mail: 814 Edgewood Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia 30307.
The family intends to release a full obituary soon.
