Chicago-based artist Nick Cave has been in Atlanta this week preparing for his performance Up Right, taking place at Ponce City Market this Friday through Sunday. Commissioned by Flux Projects, Up Right will feature male “practitioners” and “initiates” wearing Cave’s signature Soundsuits, colorful, elaborate ceremonial-looking costumes. Cave has collaborated with Spelman College dance professor T. Lang to create this series of performances.
Lauri Stallings and her dance troupe glo, which performs in public places among its audience, have been commissioned by Creative Time for a six-week performance in New York’s Central Park, beginning May 15. We asked Stallings to chat with Cave about his project, his upcoming Detroit commission, and the role of place, collaboration, movement, and the audience in both of their practices. They were joined by Bob Faust, Cave’s special projects director.
(The Up Right performances are free but completely booked. People will be allowed to enter if there are no-shows.)
