The deadline is right around the corner! BURNAWAY and Pelican Bomb are still accepting applications to their inaugural critic-in-residence program until Tuesday, July 15 at 5 pm. The organizations will select three applicants to participate in individual two-week, dual-city residencies taking place between September 2014 and June 2015.
With seed funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, BURNAWAY and Pelican Bomb have created a residency program that connects leading writers in the visual arts from throughout the country with local artist communities in Atlanta and New Orleans.
While in residence, the selected applicants maintain a schedule of artist studio visits; gallery, museum, and private collection tours; and some arranged dinners and meetings. The applicants are expected to conduct one public lecture, lead one student writers workshop, and participate in one peer-to-peer convening in each city.
The residency is free to selected applicants and includes round-trip airfare to and from New Orleans and Atlanta, accomodations, ground transportation, some meals, and a $2,500 stipend. Although some time will be reserved for personal work, exploration, and reflection, this residency is intended for writers/critics who prioritize connection, discussion, and community engagement.
To be eligible to apply, a writer must be:
- A US citizen or permanent legal resident
- At least 25 years old
- An individual
- A published author
A writer is not eligible if he or she is:
- Applying on behalf of an organization
- A full-time student in a degree-granting program (with the exception of those students who are simultaneously maintaining professional careers as arts writers)
Application Process Individuals working in arts writing and criticism in the United States are encouraged to apply. Applicants are selected based on artistic excellence, availability, and fit within the program parameters. Demonstrated interest in issues related to the participating cities, the role of regionalism, and/or writing and community engagement is a plus but not required. A panel of jurors, along with BURNAWAY and Pelican Bomb staff, reviews applicants. Applications should include the following:
- Completed Application (below)
- Curriculum Vitae including publication history (self publishing accepted)
- Letter of Intent
- Writing Samples
- Two professional references (name and contact information)
