Announcing BURNAWAY’s 2019 Art Crushes

Next month, BURNAWAY will celebrate its tenth anniversary and new leadership at Art Crush, the organization’s signature annual fundraiser and fête. Art Crush 2019 will take place at The Factory Atlanta in Chamblee, located near the bustling multicultural nexus of Buford Highway. This unique location has inspired the theme of this year’s event, Year of the Pig, which draws connections between the 2019 Lunar New Year and one of the South’s most beloved cultural exports—barbeque—as a way of celebrating intersections between immigrant cultures and the American South.

In line with this location and our revitalized artist-centered mission, artist and Chamblee resident Jiha Moon will serve as the event’s Honorary Chair. Drag performers Taylor Alxndr and Mystery Meat, fixtures of Atlanta’s underground nightlife scene, will serve as emcees for the evening. Known for her eclectic blend of vintage international dance music, DJ Yoon Nam will provide the party’s soundtrack, and mixologist Navarro Carr of The Sound Table will craft signature Art Crush cocktails.

This year’s silent artwork auction features a highly curated selection of works by emerging and established artists with ties to the American South. Many of these artists are working across the South, while others are native Southerners who are making their mark outside of the region in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. In the weeks leading up to Art Crush, BA will use its editorial platform to (re)acquaint readers with some of these artists and their work.
