Ekphrastic! An Arts Writing Intensive for High School Students

February 28 – March 21, 2015Saturdays from 10 AM to 1 PM

Ekphrastic is an unparalleled opportunity for high school students with an eye for art and a passion for writing.

Over the course of four consecutive Saturdays in February and March, Ekphrastic participants will visit some of the most exciting art in Atlanta, explore the different methods and purposes of writing about art, and work with writing mentors to produce and edit pieces for publication on BURNAWAY’s online magazine.

The 2015 program will include visits to Hammonds House Museum, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Dashboard Co-Op, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.

By collaborating with writing professionals, speaking with leaders in art-related fields, and trying their own hands at responding to and critiquing art, participants in this intensive will gain invaluable professional and creative knowledge at a young age.

This experience will be offered FREE to 16 selected high school students with strong writing skills and/or artistic talent. Students must complete an application that includes two short answer questions and a 300-500 word response to a piece of art.

Submit applications to Diana Guyton, Program Director, at on or before December 12, 2014.

Now in its second year, the Ekphrastic writing mentorship program is a collaboration between BURNAWAY, Hammonds House Museum, and The Wren’s Nest.
