The High Museum of Art has announced its upcoming “Sprawl! Drawing Outside the Lines,” a follow-up to the popular “Drawing Inside the Perimeter” show in 2013. Curated by modern and contemporary curator Michael Rooks, “Sprawl” will feature over 100 works on paper by more than 75 Georgia artists, this time including some living “outside the perimeter,” in such cities as Athens, Columbus, Decatur, Lawrenceville, and Smyrna. The exhibition will be on view July 18-October 4.
Rooks has again been busy buying works from a host of local artists. The new acquisitions were funded largely by a $60,000 grant from the Antinori Foundation to establish the Antinori Fund for the acquisition of works by Georgia artists. The acquisitions for the 2013 show were made through the Lambert Fund, which was bequeathed to the High by Judith Alexander in the name of Marianne Lambert.
During the exhibition’s run, the High will present its annual Monster Drawing Rally, on September 19. Museum visitors will be able to watch 75 local artists create works that will be sold that day for $75 each. The proceeds will go to the purchase of more works on paper by regional artists for the High’s permanent collection.
