SATURDAY: Claude Monet comes to the High Museum!

FRIDAY, JUNE 5

Local SCAD-Atlantan Sergio Garzon presents his series of complex and colorful drawings on paper at Barry Sons Art Gallery, located at TULA. The original opening was Thursday at 5:30, but Garzon designated another day for a second “casual Friday” reception—no fancy shirts, just viewing of good art in comfort. (Yay for the power of artistic license!

New photography by Steve Shapiro opens at Jackson Fine Art tonight. The exhibition documents the filming of The Godfather and has some pretty cool behind the scenes footage worth checking out. The show runs through August 22.

And three other events of interest, partly since I know little about them … any clues out there?

- U*Space Gallery opens a new solo exhibition by Stephen A. Webber titled Thanks Fa Lettin Me Share.
- Kai Lin Art (800 Peachtree Street NE, Atlanta) presents Pop Circus, featuring artists Marcelo Gavelo, Sir Fred Gear, Matt Maloney, and Marcelo Sgarbi. The collection focuses on detailed craftsmanship within boxes and books.
- Local photographer Kate Crosby is opening her newest show at Jill Celeste Gallery (321 W. Hill St., Decatur) in Oakhurst titled Boulevard: Exploring Atlanta’s Most Violent Street. Her work draws a wavy line between creepy and fun, adding to the message of her photography.

SATURDAY, JUNE 6

Featuring the sounds of local bands including Book of Colors and artists R Land, Baxter Crane, and Lucha to name a few, the Artlantis festival is a must see! Organized by Beep Beep Gallery, the festival location is actually Druid Hills Baptist Church at the corner of Ponce and Highland (1085 Ponce De Leon Ave NE). With a variety of artists and sounds for your ears, Artlantis will delight the artist and music-lover alike from 10AM-8PM. (And there will be food.) Check the Artlantis site for concert showtimes and more!

Though it might be a hyperbole, I’ve always wanted to write: Claude Monet takes Atlanta by storm! True, Impressionism isn’t for everyone, but it’s still worth a look. More from the High Museum profile:

The highlight of the exhibition is a breathtaking 42-foot painting that inspires a sense of serenity, meditation, and the infinite. Painted at the end of his life, this series became Monet’s ‘obsession,’ as he wrote in 1908.

But don’t let Monet’s paintings overshadow Richard Misrach’s photography solo On the Beach, which also opens at the High on Saturday. (See also this video over at the ACP Now! blog.)

GATHER ATLANTA—a quest for new ideas, artistic diversity, and collaboration amongst organizations around Atlanta—offers inspiration and a breath of fresh air. MINT, BurnAway.org, WonderRoot, and Thoughtmarker present the first annual “emerging creatives conference.” Click the image at right for more information about our discussion panel, moderated by Cinqué Hicks of Creative Loafing and including speakers Louise Shaw (CDC, Nexus), Matt Haffner (artist), Michael David Murphy (ACP), Rachael Spiewak (Sopo), and Stephanie Dowda!

Youngblood is following in the footsteps of Beep Beep Gallery’s, Southern Comfort exhibition. The exhibition is a traveling show of works on paper from ten artist’s from [5] art gallery in Tampa, FL. After a stint at Youngblood, the exhibition will move to Nashville’s Twist Gallery, which was the gallery which swapped artists with Beep Beep for their exhibition. The opening will be from 7-11PM.

If you missed the opening for the Sunday Southern Art Revival and George Long’s new show, then you have to stop by the cook out at Marcia Wood Gallery this Saturday from 3-9PM. SSAR members George Long, Jesse Cregar, Mario Schambon, John Tindel, and Michi will be hosting the southern food and art spectacular. Bonus to getting there early: the first 30 guests will get a limited edition handmade print.

If every week’s To Do List has a theme, then this week’s is community. Between site specific performance art, festivals galore, and anniversary parties you should have no trouble relishing in the awesomeness that summer in Atlanta has to offer.

Start your gallery hopping off right this Friday with photography by students at the Center for Pan-Asian Community Services, on view at the new WonderRoot Gallery at Eyedrum. The exhibit wraps up the three month long class held at WonderRoot. The opening reception is from 5-7PM. The exhibit runs through June 15.

Sandler Hudson has a new show opening this Friday as well. Artist Angelbert Metoyer and Dutch sociophotographer Charlie Koolhaas have collaborated to create the exhibit Global Static. The opening reception is from 7-9PM, and the exhibit is on view through July 11. While you are there you can run next door to see the closing reception for Kiang Gallery’s Beijing based-artist, Meng Jin, whose work captures chandeliers in various institutional settings. This reception will also be from 7-9PM.

Whitespace will be hosting the BFA Photography Show for Yukari Umekawa in their small gallery, Whitespec. Umekawa’s exhibition, itodenwa (2 cans + 1 string), will be showing concurrently with Scott Silvey’s Civic Remedies exhibition, which opened last week in the main gallery space. The reception will be from 7-10PM. The exhibit runs through July 11.

The Contemporary is hitting the streets this Saturday with performance artist Nancy Popp. Popp’s work involves climbing up and around various public spaces, which I have to say, sounds pretty fun to watch. Keeping us on our toes, the times and locations will not be announced until sometime today, so make sure to check The Contemporary’s website this afternoon for more details.

The Indie Craft Experience is back again and just as good as ever. Returning to their summer location of Centennial Olympic Park, the crafters will be out and selling in all of their D.I.Y. glory all day Saturday and Sunday. Both days also will include talks on how to turn your plastic grocery bags into everything but the kitchen sink and introductions to weaving. Check out their list of vendors today when you get bored at work so that you can have your shopping list ready to go for the weekend.

If you want Chris Appleton to woo you with his tiger eyes, this weekend is a good time to do it! The WonderRoot One Year Anniversary Party will start at 4PM and feature everything from an I Love Atlanta art show to WonderRoot TV and BBQ. If we are lucky, there may even be a kissing booth. ($5 after 8PM) Work up some liquid confidence by heading over to the East Atlanta Beer Festival to sample over 170 craft beers during the day so that you can go make eyes with Chris and Witt Saturday evening.

Beep Beep Gallery will be hosting a portfolio review starting at 7PM. Conducting the affair will be Nashville’s Twist Gallery ladies, Beth Gilmore and Caroline Carlisle. Following the portfolio review is the closing reception for their current exhibition, Southern Comfort, which features artwork by Nashville artists Duncan McDaniel, Erin Plew, and John Whitten. As if an evening at Beep Beep wasn’t fun enough already, Thy Mighty Contract also will be playing a free show starting at 9PM.
