I was lucky enough to photograph the final rehearsal for Full Radius Dance’s performance The Path Beyond. This performance consisted of three separate pieces all centering on different themes and movements. I chose to focus this Dodge & Burn on one of the pieces from the performance, Ethos/Pathos/Logos choreographed by Onur Topal-Sümer with original music by Jon Ciliberto, to really try to show how the lighting, props, and different movements of the dancers helped to convey energy and emotion.
This performance left an impression that was not really felt until I sat down to edit the photos. Sometimes, when photographing the entire process of taking a photograph overwhelms my other senses and I detach from the actual events unfolding in front of my camera. This is especially true for stage performances. The camera is a narrow view of the overall production, and it is hard to focus on everything at once when trying to find poignant moments to snap a picture. Looking over the photographs, there were clearly arcs within the choreography and lighting that seemed to represent different aspects of the Aristotelian means of persuasion. This group of photographs tries to display those complicated shifts from light to dark, from action to inaction, and everything in between.
Dance is one of those subsets of the arts that fascinates and intrigues me, but every time I witness a performance, I am utterly sure I have no idea what’s going on. Sometimes I struggle with appreciating dance because I always feel I don’t “get it.” Then again, I’m not sure that always “getting” art of any kind matters. For dance specifically (to me at least) there is beauty in the movement, in the exertion of the dancers, in the interaction between the music and choreography; and I feel if that’s the kind of appreciation I come away with, that’s okay.
