For the second year in a row, Atlanta will be shaken out of its post-holiday coma with readings and performances from some of the city’s most raucous entertainers. The event, as stated on the press release, “examines the chaos of the holiday season through satire and mischief.” Along with embracing “awkward and smarmy” moments, as author Jayne O’ Connor says, the Holiday Hangover promises to be a welcomed energetic, hilarious event to break in 2013.
Holiday Hangover is a collaboration between Hyde and Vouched, two literary powers that have a strong reputation for hosting compelling events. Jayne O’ Connor, the proprietor of Hyde Atlanta, has a habit of refusing to play it safe and often incorporates drag and burlesque into her events. The most recent event thrown by Hyde, last month’s Bad Bitches 2012: apocaBITCH at the Star Bar, lived up to expectations by featuring a short film, readings by a few of Atlanta’s highly regarded female authors, and, you guessed it, burlesque.
Laura Straub has been a champion of the literary scene since launching Vouched Books Atlanta in July 2011. She has teamed up with many of Atlanta’s literary organizations, which most recently included Kill Your Darlings and New South to help bring a number of acclaimed independent writers to the city.
Collaborative events like this, which incorporate multiple groups from various scenes, are important for the Atlanta community. They help expose audiences to artists that they may never have otherwise seen and help grow the artist network as well.
Saturday’s event begins at 8PM and will include Readings and performances by:
Jayne O’Connor
Laura Straub
Lauren Traetto
Noah Gardenswartz
Tony Jenkins
Suehyla El-Attar
Johnny Carroll
Julian Modguno
Nick Tecosky
Along with these writers and comedians, there are rumors that a few surprises are in store. Folks from Dad’s Garage, Naked City, the Atlanta Zine Library, and a surprise musical guest may be making their presence felt as well.
