I can only speak for myself as a 2012 LW artist, but I was doing illegal pieces in Los Angeles for years before I started doing commissioned murals. I've known of Sten/Lex and Tika from the European scene for a while now; they all were doing illegal work for years. For the most part, it is only events like LW, Miami Art Basel, the Cans festival in UK... in which artists are doing safe walls en masse.
A few of the other girls will gladly admit they aren't "street artists" in the true definition of the term; some call what they do "Public Art", muralism, Urban Art, and a myriad of other throwaway names. It's a tricky definition these days, and Street Art has merely become a catch-all for what's going on these days.

Street art (which, while an offshoot of graffiti, really isn't about graff at all) took off on its massive popularity run at least 7 yrs ago (with rumblings for years before), so this is nothing new. It hasn't been underground for a while...In 2008, Shepard Fairey's Obama images took street art pretty much as far mainstream as you can go.

One thing "Lights Out" has wrong, the old school graff legends DO go to conferences and I have found there is a mutual respect among all of us, regardless of background; we watch each other paint, share techniques...because in the end, what it boils down to is that we are all artists. We grow and adjust.

A tradition of asking forgiveness? Not sure where you got this information but original street art was unapologetic and illegal . Forgiveness was not asked. Real street artists remained relatively anonymous to the public. Some of these LW artists are good but not street artists by original definition. I can see why they want to call themselves that but let's get our facts straight based on historical reality instead of today's hot art trends. As usual, once an underground art form becomes popular with the mainstream, it's lost it's original edge. I could respect this event more if it wasn't attempting to be street. You gotta earn that shit. The streets don't play by the rules and they don't go to conferences. They don't get permits from the city. Love the female angle tho.

For me, LivingWalls2012 was indeed a success. As I revisit the murals, I experience a new wave of inspiration for my own work. However, I did walk out of the panel after RJ made his remarks. Just couldn't sit through another word.

The first picture is not a mural part of Living Walls. Could you please make that correction. That is actually a mural commission by City of Atlanta.
