BURNAWAY’s third birthday is exactly two weeks from today (we published our first article on October 6, 2008). Today also marks the third year that BURNAWAY has won Best of Atlanta awards from Creative Loafing newspaper!

This morning’s edition contains arts editor Debbie Michaud’s inspiring synopsis of the last 24 months: “After helping redefine the city’s artistic identity, a new confidence seems to have arisen among Atlanta’s emerging artists, a maturity that’s allowed for an increasingly refined and nuanced creative community.”

BURNAWAY is part of this movement. We aspire to be both a symptom and a cause, to inspire and be inspired, to compliment words with action, and, as interpreters, to be coproducers in the creation of meaning. Our writers believe in quality and professionalism, but we also gladly take up arms in solidarity with artists. Do you hunger for more challenge? More beauty? More strangeness? We’re your accomplices in making awesome things happen.

So this is all to say that the award belongs to our supporters and to the artists that we in turn support. Thanks to everyone who voted us “Best Local Arts Blog” for 2011 (click here for last year’s awards)! And, more importantly, congratulations to all the winners and (whether you received awards or not) all the artists, dancers, choreographers, curators, art centers, collectives, cooperatives, galleries, museums, event organizers, and creative pioneers who’re making Atlanta such a weird and exhilarating place to be involved. Here’s to the next three years!
