BURNAWAY fundraiser and fireside chat with Ben Venom

Written By Jeremy Abernathy on May 18, 2011 in COLUMNS

Dear neighbors,

This publication is committed to providing fresh dialogue on contemporary art without charging subscription fees, without sacrificing trees for a monthly printed edition, and, above all, through articles written with smarts and soul. BURNAWAY runs on community support from generous individuals like you.

Please join us in Cabbagetown this Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 6-9PM, as we extend the conversation with an intimate chat with Ben Venom, a San Francisco-based artist who returns to Atlanta with love for the city that gave him his start. Kristin Juárez, the columnist behind The Fringe, will represent BURNAWAY as facilitator for the talk and Q&A, examining what it means to be a Southern artist working outside the South, as well as what it means to be a newcomer in Atlanta. The chat seeks to build a more constructive conversation following the debate incited by last month’s article, “Why do young artists leave Atlanta?” Join our Facebook event page or see below for more details.

WHEN: Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 6-9PM

WHERE: The Cabbagetown home of Stephanie Dowda and John Paul Floyd (alternate rainy-day location *TBA)

WHAT: BURNAWAY fundraiser and conversation with Ben Venom, an Atlanta artist living on the West Coast, about how to survive and prosper as a southern artist outside the South. Discussion led by BurnAway journalist, Kristin Juarez

FOOD: Home Grown Southern deliciousness

DRINK: Intoxicatingly sweet tea and home-brewed beer from Burrough’s Brew

COST: $25 per person includes food, drinks, and special-edition screen-printed bandanna by Ben Venom

*In the event of rain, there will be an alternate location in or near Cabbagetown.

As always, we are yours truly and thankfully,

BURNAWAY

Alas, I am leaving at the crack of dawn for another field mission, but please extend my greetings and love to Ben, my former student.

It would mean alot to me if you could pass on this message.

    Go BEN!
