I’m a bit of a sucker when it comes to good causes and difficult questions. Two events opening at Emory University this Thursday, December 3, provide a little of both. Piece Out! is a fundraiser to benefit Refugee Family Services at Emory’s Goizueta Business School, Room W525, from 7-9:30PM. The show will feature work by local artists and will support youth and literacy programs for newly arrived refugee families in the Stone Mountain and Clarkston areas. Just on the other side of campus, the photographers of Picturing Home will exhibit work in response to the daunting question posed by jurors Julian Cox and Jason Francisco: “What is home and where is it?” Picturing Home opens at Emory Visual Arts Gallery from 5-7PM.

Food for thought in case you visit both shows: Will the photographers’ vision of home overlap with the real-life experiences of refugee families? Are these two views compatible, or are they worlds apart?

This show will not only feature some awesome youth art (photography, pottery, collage, jewelry, etc), but also work by great local artists, including: Sam Parker, Joe Tsambiras, Karen Cleveland, and Colleen Hackett.
