Avantika Bawa stands up to the man

Written By Susannah Darrow on October 1, 2009 in Uncategorized

Clearly things weren't all rainbows for Bawa at SCAD

… or at least the private art school. Former SCAD professor and artist Avantika Bawa is suing her former employer for discrimination. According to today’s AJC article,

“[S]he was denied promotions given to male faculty, according to a complaint filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Avantika Bawa, who is of Asian Indian descent, also says she was fired after she pointed out the lack of diversity among the institution’s professors, according to the complaint.”

Read more about how Bawa is taking SCAD to the Feds in today’s AJC article.

very strange indeed, when corporate culture mixes so seemlessly into an art school (as is the case with SCAD). in some ways, this story is “so atlanta.”

I’d be careful to speculate. It’s news for sure, but going to court is pretty messy business. [Shaking my head.]

i dunno. i think bicycling is the new way to rebel. SCAD. everyone knows about SCAD. or feels it. or have actually felt its experience.
    i know people who have.
there is anintent that is an unaware honest veneer.. or some subtle additive that auto-designs itself into the scenery, the background music.
my association with it as it teen in the 80′s ,the name “scad”-brought to mind open aired creative feelings.
it’s not in talking points so much as a general instinctive awareness. intuitive.
honestly, i know we all feel it.
associations with that feeling of the name. (false truths?) one creature consumes another.
felt. but the cumulative result will be in what are obvious carefullly speculated practicalities. logical obvious structured . manufactured.
this is a specific case. so the grid deserves another grid to encase it relatively.
so now that this is taking place.
the feelings i know- are unrelated
but serve as a footprint. or a setting.
    and mostly
    what i feel is
    they can have themselves.
    i care about individuals.

avantika was the best(hardest) professor in the painting dept… she was difficult but that’s what you’re paying an ungodly amount of money for.. they’re foolish for letting her go..

  • j coe

hmmmm…. it would be news if it were true. She was let go because she has a very difficult demeanor, was unprofessional and even rude to students, and received an overwhelming amount of complaints and negative evaluations from students. How about taking some responsibility for your own failure to do the job, and stop trying to cast blame on SCAD.

    shameful

  • g.scott

haaa… i think if every professor was fired for being rude to students, SCAD wouldn’t have any professors.. It’s not “blame” that SCAD should have, Shameful, it’s a “responsibility” to their employees who have worked their ass for a decade..

An overwhelming amount of negative evaluations?.. I don’t believe that for a second.. I had Avantika and she was the best professor I had the entire time at SCAD and many of classmates agreed..

i think it’s pretty clear you didn’t have her as a professor, you’re just regurgitating what you’ve been told, probably by SCAD (big surprise!)

    shameful, indeed

u guys hear about that symphony we aint gittin done?

  • poor poor me

I burnt my mouth on McDonalds coffee……………I will sue them! That’s what this case sound like. No institution in this day and age is stupid enough to discriminate. She needs to take responsibility for her actions!

I graduated from SCAD and I had a wonderful experience. Part of it was thanks to great teachers such as Avantika. I feel very sad that this happened. I had a class with her and it was a class that really has helping me in my career as a professional emerging artist. Her personality is strong but this shouldn’t be a problem if you work hard in her class. She is a teacher that really wants you to be the best, and give the best of you to be a cutting edge artist. During my studies in SCAD I saw Avantika giving her students the 100% of her.

I had bawa as a prof in sav. Her teaching style was relaxed. At the time, I loved the class because I got a big fat “A” to hangout, drink coffee, and play artist with bawa. After having other prof’s, I realized how little she taught me. Now, I hate the class because bawa was a waste of my time and money. Does this mean I can sue her?

  • andrew

there is absolutely no way that SCAD would have kept a prof like Avantika for ten years if she wasnt good at what she did.

are they questioning their own judgement, processes and student evaluations?

am sure that avantika’s work and assignments from hereon would put her faculty to shame….for letting her go

you might as well get your degree from McDonald’s, if you choose to go to SCAD. and if you’re thinking about going there you might as well take that money and cram it in your ass. scad is nothing more then a laughing matter in the art world or in any world for that matter. Dude go fu** yourself. It’s an accredited college, and yes I graduated with honors from there. You think that I’m just as smart now as I would be working for McDonalds? Why don’t you ask my employer that. Unless you’re a former SCAD student yourself you have no right to talk sh**.
