Dogwood branches

A cottage sits in the backyard
wooden shingles green

Brown thrashers
tan and curved beak

settles in
branches of the dogwood

now all these things
are covered with leaves

An Old Lesson

The fragile footsteps of the Black Squirrel
Scour the shrub steppe of the Pikes Peak Plateau
A mountain range created during the Laramide Orogeny,
which took place about 65 million years ago.

Ponderosa Pines now droop their needle brooms
Over the fossilized remains of ancient life,
Digging their roots into the cracked granite.

Periodically they are moved to reproduce
In events of forest wide fecundity
Whose genius men may attribute
To the secrets of mother nature alone.

The mechanism’s incalculable nature
Ultimately threatens the success
Of the species most busily calculating
Their own survival.
